The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which it organises a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension.

Preparing a European Capital of Culture can be an opportunity for the city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and it can help foster urban regeneration, change the city’s image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale.

Well, it seems that Spain has designated its finalists. Málaga campaigned for the title, but apparently lost today. 2016 european capital of culture

Burgos, San Sebastian, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Cordoba, Segovia and Zaragoza are the cities that have passed the examination to qualify for the European Capital of Culture 2010 European Union.

The Chairman of the Selection Committee of the European Capital of Culture, Manfred Gaulhafer, announced the cities that will access the final stage of the selection process in July 2011. Fifteen candidates from all corners of Spain have submitted their projects to qualify for this distinction.

As Gaulhafer pointed out, “This has been an important week for Spanish culture, after 15 screening sessions to decide the city recommended that the phase will end and will be released in mid-2011.”
